Podcasts we're listening to

Given the times we’re living in, how we spend our days whilst either working or personally, has become a matter of not just importance but a necessity. Necessary for our mental health, our motivation, inspiration, for comfort, and company during these lonely times. It goes without saying that as a nation, a world even, we are binge-watching more television than ever - with little to do outside and restrictions, staying safe indoors and watching our screens seems a no-brainer.

But there’s a lot to be said for our audio intake as well. Listening to voice can be relaxing and it provides a break from our blue-lit screens. More than that, podcasts and radio output just keeps getting better and better. In the last ten years, people starting their own podcasts has increased massively and the industry and audiences are really taking this platform seriously. For every genre, there’s a podcast!

There’s been a buzz in the office lately (albeit a muted, distanced buzz) around podcasts and which ones our space282 members’ favour, so we thought we’d put a list together for you:

https://www.adamgrant.net/podcast/

Organizational psychologist Adam Grant visits unusual places that are leading the way to improve work lives.

https://www.adam-buxton.co.uk/

Adam Buxton, he of the iconic Channel 4 90s ‘Adam & Joe Show’. Adam went on to become a popular comedy broadcaster, going on to win fans with his & Joe’s XFM show and then at BBC6 Music, it made total sense for Buxton to start a podcast in 2015, this is always top of the podcast lists!

Marc Maron, the US writer, performer and stand-up comedian has created almost a cult hit with WTF, being one of the first in 2009 to change the podcast landscape. Brad Pitt famously declared himself a fan for years! Maron’s honest and raw persona vs some brilliant guests makes for compelling listening, thoroughly recommend the recent Patti Smith episode.

The hilarious podcast from US actor and comedy performer, Dax Shepard (Without a Paddle, Employee of the Month). Interviews with famous guests about their lives and stories to tell, very entertaining.

https://podtail.com/en/podcast/gossipmongers/

British comedians and actors, David Earl and Joe Wilkinson, bring you Gossip Mongers where they read out unsubstantiated rumours sent in by listeners. At the end of each episode, they choose their favourite piece of gossip and it then goes through to the Gossip World Cup Finals.

Out to Lunch features one of the world’s top food critics, Jay Rayner, lunching with big names and chatting to them about food, life, anecdotes, dietary requirements. Rayner, as always is a brilliant host and the takeaway lockdown episodes are a fun listen!

With pop singer/songwriter Jessie Ware and her mum, Lennie. The pair cook from Jessie’s dining room table for various famous guests whilst having a good old chat. The genuine mother/daughter banter between Jessie and Lennie is hilarious and relatable.

Do I need to talk about TED? The non-profit ideas machine? Beginning in 1984 (I know!) as a conference where Tech, Entertainment and Design came together. Daily talks vary from science to business to deejaying to you name it. Inspiration led, this should be part of your daily routine!

https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/land-of-the-giants/id1465767420

Land of the Giants is a fascinating podcast about five tech giants and how they changed the world, but at what cost? Facebook. Apple. Amazon. Netflix. Google. Particularly recommend the episode; The Netflix Effect, very interesting to learn about the streaming network that is our current companion.

One of our space282 members, a creative pioneer in the ad world, turns to music and beats for his listening motivation and recommends this weekly roundup:

For Monday inspo: Sub Focus and Wikinson (DJs and record producers) - available here.

For midweek bounce: Bicep (electronic music duo) live at Printworks - available here.

Friday work rave: Maceo Plex at Hudson River, New York for Cercle (diverse techno, electro, house DJ/producer), available here.

Finally, we’ll leave you on the subject of music - that free gift that evokes emotion and nostalgia in everyone, unless you’re a cyborg. This newsletter is absolutely brilliant; Love Will Save The Day, and is put together by local DJ/creative, Jed Hallam. It’s been a real gem during the pandemic, so many nuggets to get your ears and eyes into, subscribe to it here.
